Square Bar Rail & Flat Bar Rail for Crane
Glory Rail is the world’s leading manufacturer of crane rail systems. Our precision rails are specifically designed
for light- to medium-duty applications (up to 30 metric tons). Our flat steel crane rails and square steel guide rails
feature precision-machined R3 chamfered edges, which significantly reduce stress concentration and extend the
service life of crane wheels. They are ideal for overhead cranes, electric hoists, and industrial trolleys.

What is a flat steel rail?
Flat steel is a type of rolled steel with a rectangular cross-section used as running rails for light-duty cranes. It is typically produced through a hot-rolling process (with the option of cold finishing to achieve tighter tolerances) and is welded directly to the supporting steel beams. Glory Rail offers flat steel rails in sizes ranging from 40×30 mm to 100×60 mm, in materials including S235JR, S355JR, Q235B, and Q355B, and supports custom-length cutting.
Common Sizes: 40×30、50×30、60×40、70×40、80×60、100×60mm

What are square steel rails?
Square steel has a square cross-section (with equal width and height) and is used as a guide rail to direct the movement of crane wheels. Its symmetrical geometric structure ensures even load distribution and operational stability. Glory Rail manufactures a full range of square steel rails from 50×50 mm to 110×110 mm, available in carbon steel and low-alloy steel grades, with hot-rolled or cold-finished surface treatments.
Common Sizes: 30×30、40×40、50×50、60×60、70×70、80×80、100×100、110×110mm
Whether you need standard 50×50 square bar rails or custom flat bar rails for crane applications, our in-house fabrication shop can provide precision-cut, highly durable solutions tailored to your engineering needs.

Customization Capabilities by Glory Rail
Glory Rail operates its own processing plant, specializing in the production of square steel rails and flat steel rails. As a flat steel supplier that integrates production, manufacturing, and export, we manage every step of the process, from raw material procurement to the delivery of finished products.

45° Bevel Cutting:
Both ends of square steel crane rails can be beveled to enable seamless butt welding, thereby eliminating impact and vibration when crane wheels pass over the joint.

Material Equivalency:
The Q345B (GB standard) we supply is fully equivalent to the European EN standard S355JR and the German DIN St52-3, ensuring compliance with global project specifications.

Surface Treatment:
Surface treatment options include: black skin, shot blasting, or galvanizing for corrosive environments.
Versatile Load Capacity Applications
Although square and flat steel are commonly used for light-duty applications, Glory Rail’s square steel crane rails and flat steel crane rails can also handle medium-duty operations of up to 30 metric tons when properly sized. Larger-sized options, such as 80×80 square steel rails and 100×60 hot-rolled flat steel rails, provide enhanced load-bearing capacity for demanding industrial environments. For projects requiring loads exceeding 30 metric tons or high-frequency operations, our engineering team can provide expert consultation to determine whether cold-drawn steel bars or standard crane rails (QU/DIN series) are more suitable.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Square-section crane rails feature a symmetrical cross-section, providing better lateral stability for trolley movement. Flat-section crane rails are more cost-effective and are typically used in light-duty monorail hoist or suspended crane systems where lateral loads are minimal.
Square steel rails are directly secured to the steel support beams by welding. The minimum yield strength of the support beams should be no less than 250 N/mm². We provide 45° bevel cuts at both ends of each rail to facilitate butt welding and assembly. During installation, ensure the rails are straight and level. It is recommended to periodically inspect the integrity of the welds and the flatness of the rail surfaces. For heavy-duty applications, consider using bolted connection plates instead of direct welding.
We supply carbon structural steel grades Q235B (GB), S235JR (EN 10025-2), ASTM A36, and SS400 (JIS), as well as low-alloy high-strength grades Q355B (GB), S355JR (EN 10025-2), and ST52-3 (DIN). For heavy-duty or high-wear applications, we recommend S355JR/Q355B, which has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa. All materials come with a complete MTC EN 10204 3.1 material traceability certificate.
Although square steel and flat steel are typically classified as light-duty crane rail solutions (generally for loads under 15 metric tons), properly engineered square steel crane rails and flat steel crane rails are fully capable of supporting medium-duty operations of up to 30 metric tons. For example, larger flat bar rail dimensions, such as 100x60mm, or 80×80 square bar rails, provide a wider contact surface and excellent lateral stability, allowing them to distribute wheel loads more effectively than smaller-section profiles. As a professional flat steel supplier, manufacturer, factory, exporter, and wholesaler, Glory Rail always recommends conducting professional wheel load calculations before finalizing the selection of profiles for medium-sized projects.
The decision depends on three key factors: maximum wheel load, duty class (frequency of use), and operating environment.
1. For light- to medium-duty loads (≤ 30 metric tons) with a standard duty class, square steel guide rails or hot-rolled flat steel offer excellent cost-effectiveness and are easier to weld directly to the runway beams.
2. For heavy-duty applications (> 30 metric tons), high-frequency operations (such as steel mills and ports), or extreme impact loads, standard QU or DIN crane rails must be used.
If you are unsure, our team of professional custom flat steel manufacturers can review your crane specifications and recommend the most economical and safest cold-drawn/cold-worked steel bar or standard rail solution for you.
Standard square steel has sharp 90-degree corners, which can cause severe stress concentration and accelerate wear on crane wheels. Our 50×50 square steel rails feature precision-machined R3 (or R5) rounded edges. This design distributes loads evenly, significantly extending the service life of both the rails and the crane wheels—a hallmark of our quality as a leading flat steel manufacturer.
S235JR has a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and is suitable for general-purpose, light-duty lifting applications. S355JR has a yield strength of 355 MPa (an increase of approximately 50%), making S355JR square steel bar rails ideal for heavier trolley loads, higher operating speeds, and longer maintenance intervals.
