Both are excellent choices, but the specific selection depends on the working environment and load rating. Q345B is the standard, cost-effective choice for general-purpose medium-duty bridge and gantry cranes. Q355B offers higher yield strength and better low-temperature impact toughness, making it the material of choice for heavy-duty applications, metallurgical cranes, or equipment operating in cold climates (below -20°C). Our engineers will recommend the optimal material based on your FEM duty class classification.
Yes, Glory Rail offers complete drum assemblies to ensure perfect compatibility and reduce your installation time. Standard assemblies include steel plate drums, quenched and tempered 45# steel drum shafts, heavy-duty self-aligning roller bearings (such as SKF, FAG, or equivalent domestic brands), and bearing housings. We can also customize shaft dimensions and keyway specifications to perfectly match your existing gear reducer or hoist motor.
When custom-manufacturing a replacement for a fabricated steel plate drum, it is necessary to measure the drum’s outer diameter, the length of the drum body between flanges, the total shaft length, the flange thickness, the rope groove pitch, the rope groove depth, the direction of rotation (left-hand/right-hand), and the wire rope diameter. Providing the original manufacturer’s drawings or nameplate information can further expedite accurate verification and engineering calculations.
The spiral rope groove is specifically designed for single-layer wire rope winding, guiding the wire rope to run smoothly along a continuous spiral path; the Lebus zigzag rope groove, on the other hand, is specifically designed for multi-layer winding applications, and its parallel zigzag structure completely eliminates rope squeezing, jamming, and tangling during deep-hole hoisting or operations involving significant head.
Q355B (equivalent to S355JR) or Q355D (suitable for low-temperature, high-toughness environments) are the standard materials for heavy-duty drums due to their excellent yield strength ($>355\text{ MPa}$) and weldability. For extremely heavy-duty applications or conditions requiring very high impact resistance, high-strength rolled steel plates or low-alloy steels such as 42CrMo are used.
After the CNC-machined rope grooves are completed and the final finishing is performed, all high-speed steel plate wire rope drums are tested on a dedicated dynamic balancing machine. By precisely welding counterweights to the inner wall of the drum, the vibration parameters are brought into compliance with the ISO 1940 G6.3 or G2.5 dynamic balancing standards.
