What is a Crane Wheel Assembly?

The crane wheel assembly is the core load-bearing and power transmission module of a crane’s traveling mechanism. Unlike individual wheels, a complete crane wheel set integrates the wheel forging, wheel axle/pin shaft, roller bearings/bearing housing, and—for drive configurations—the driving gear/open gear into a pre-assembled unit. This modular design simplifies installation, maintenance, and replacement.

Main Components:

• Wheel axle / pin shaft: Transfers radial loads and torque; typically made of 42CrMo or 45# steel, quenched and tempered to HB 217–255
• Roller bearings / bearing housing: Self-aligning roller bearings (222 series) or tapered roller bearings, mounted in angular or L-shaped bearing housings
• Driving gear / open gear: 40Cr forged steel, surface induction hardened to HRC 48–55, transmits drive torque to the wheel
• Wheel forging: 42CrMo forged crane wheel assembly tread, induction hardened to a tread hardness of HRC 45–55

Types of Crane Wheel Assembly

Glory Rail manufactures a full range of crane wheel assemblies to accommodate various crane configurations. In terms of flange design, we offer single-flange, double-flange, and flangeless wheels. In terms of bearing housing design, our product line includes crane wheel assemblies with corner bearing boxes and L-type bearing box designs. By drive type, we offer both driven and driving wheel assemblies.
We also manufacture custom crane wheel assemblies according to DIN standards or customer drawings. Whether you need compact European-style wheel assemblies or heavy-duty locomotive wheels, our team will recommend the optimal configuration. Crane Wheel Assembly Components

Rolling Bearings

Roller bearings and bearing housings (rolling bearings/bearing housings) withstand radial and axial loads.
We use three types: self-aligning roller bearings (222 series, which self-align to compensate for installation misalignment); double-row tapered roller bearings (352 series, which handle combined loads and provide precise axial positioning); single-row tapered roller bearings (322 series, used in high-speed applications). All are made of GCr15 steel with a hardness of HRC 60–64.

Wheel Alex

The wheel axle / pin shaft transmits radial loads to the bearing housing and, in the drive assembly, also transmits drive torque to the wheel.
Material: 42CrMo forged crane wheel assembly shaft steel, normalized to HB 217–255. Features internal lubrication holes; torque is transmitted via a keyway (DIN 6885) or spline (DIN 5480), and the threaded end is used for preloading the bearing lock nut.

Bearing Housing / Corner Bearing Box

Available in three designs: crane wheel assembly with corner bearing box (90° bolted, manually adjustable for alignment—most commonly used in Chinese standard cranes); 45° split bearing housing (two-piece design; the upper half can be removed to replace bearings without complete disassembly); L-type bearing box (compact design, used in European-style cranes). Materials: St 52-3 steel or QT500-7 ductile iron.

Seals & Accessories

Mounted on the drive wheel set, these gears transmit torque from the reduction gearbox to the wheels.
Two configurations are available: a bolted ring gear (replaceable, 40Cr steel, surface induction hardened to HRC 48–55) or an integral gear (machined directly onto the hub, compact, 42CrMo4). Modulus m4–m20, precision DIN 3962 Class 8–9.

Blind End-Cover

A end cap is a solid, closed bearing housing end cap with no central through-hole
Material: S355J2G3 (St 52-3) steel; dimensions are identical to those of the open end cap; complies with the DIN standard for crane wheel assemblies (DIN 15084). Secured to the bearing housing using DIN 931 hex head bolts (Grade 8.8); an NBR gasket is installed between the end cap and the housing flange to enhance sealing.

Through End Cap

A through end cap is a bearing housing end cap with a central through-hole.

Material: S355J2G3 (St 52-3) structural steel; compatible with DIN 15078/DIN 15079 standard 222 series roller bearings and bearing housings.

Material & Heat Treatment

Glory Rail manufactures forged steel crane wheel assemblies using high-quality alloy steel. Our standard material is 42CrMo forged crane wheel assemblies (equivalent to AISI 4140 / DIN 42CrMo4), which are renowned for their excellent hardenability, fatigue resistance, and high-temperature strength, making them the ideal choice for heavy-duty crane wheel assemblies available for sale in the port, metallurgy, and mining sectors.

Material Recommendation Table – Style A
Working Condition Duty Class Recommended Material Tread Hardness
Light duty A1–A3 60# / 65# steel HB 300–380
Medium duty A4–A6 65Mn / 42CrMo HRC 45–50
Heavy duty / impact A7–A8 42CrMo / 40CrNi2Mo HRC 50–55
Extreme heavy duty 42CrMo4 (deep hardened) HRC 48–54, depth ≥10mm

Each wheel undergoes a heat-treated/medium-frequency quenched crane wheel assembly process: first, the core is subjected to quenching and tempering, followed by medium-frequency induction hardening of the tread and flange surfaces. This results in a tread hardness of HRC 45–55, with a hardened layer depth of 3–15 mm (depending on the wheel diameter), while maintaining high toughness in the core to withstand impact.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Every crane wheel assembly from Glory Rail undergoes comprehensive non-destructive testing (NDT) prior to shipment. Our quality control system complies with the requirements for DIN-standard crane wheel assemblies (wheel calculations in accordance with DIN 15070; bearing calculations in accordance with DIN 15071). Inspection records are archived and available for review during customer inspections.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection of Wheel Surfaces

Ultrasonic Testing (UT):
Detects internal defects in wheel forgings, such as shrinkage cavities, inclusions, and cracks

Magnetic Particle Inspection

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI):
Identifies surface and near-surface cracks on the tread, flange, and hub

German engineers visited our factory to inspect the crane wheels

Dimensional and Hardness Testing:
CMM dimensional verification + Rockwell hardness testing of the tread (Target: tread hardness HRC 45–55)
