What Is a Crane Driving Wheel?
A crane driving wheel, also known as a drive wheel or driving wheel for a crane, is the wheel in a crane’s travel mechanism that transmits drive torque. It transfers torque from the drive motor through the axle to the tread, propelling the crane along the rails. Unlike idler wheels, the axle bore of a driving wheel must feature a keyway or spline design to prevent the load from slipping.
Glory Rail has over 15 years of manufacturing experience and specializes in the production of 42CrMo forged crane wheels and crane wheel assemblies with shafts. The factory covers an area of 20,000 m² and offers integrated capabilities in forging, heat treatment, and CNC machining. Every crane driving wheel undergoes ultrasonic testing and hardness testing before leaving the factory.

Glory Rail manufactures two types of crane wheels: forged crane wheels and cast steel crane wheels. The company offers individual wheels as well as complete sets of crane wheels, crane wheel blocks, and crane wheel assemblies (including axles).

Glory Rail — Professional Forged Crane Wheel Manufacturer in China
Glory Rail has over 15 years of manufacturing experience and specializes in the production of 42CrMo forged crane wheels and crane wheel assemblies with shafts. The factory covers an area of 20,000 m² and offers integrated capabilities in forging, heat treatment, and CNC machining. Material Selection Guide
The material of a crane driving wheel directly determines its load-bearing capacity, wear resistance, and service life. Glory Rail offers a variety of forged crane wheels and cast steel crane wheels, all of which have been heat treated to achieve the optimal balance between hardness and toughness.
| Material | Tensile Strength | Surface Hardness | Application | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 42CrMo | ≥ 1080 MPa | HB 330–380 | Heavy duty, large tonnage, port machinery | Medium-High |
| 65Mn crane wheel | ≥ 800 MPa | HB 300–350 | Medium load, general overhead cranes | Medium |
| 45# steel | ≥ 600 MPa | HB 220–280 | Light load, small tonnage | Low |
| 60Si2Mn | ≥ 1300 MPa | HB 350–400 | High impact, metallurgical cranes | Medium-High |
Why 42CrMo Is the Preferred Material for Crane Driving Wheels
42CrMo is an alloy structural steel (GB/T 3077) that offers excellent hardenability, high creep strength, and good fatigue resistance. After quenching and tempering (heat treatment), the surface hardness reaches HB 330–380, with a hardened layer depth of ≥20 mm. It is the industry-standard material for 42CrMo forged crane wheels (HB 330–380) used in heavy-duty cranes.
As a forged crane wheel manufacturer in China, Glory Rail conducts comprehensive chemical composition testing on 42CrMo steel: C 0.38–0.45%, Si 0.17–0.37%, Mn 0.50–0.80%, Cr 0.90–1.20%, Mo 0.15–0.25%.
Quality Control & Manufacturing Process
Every Glory Rail crane wheel undergoes a rigorous, multi-stage quality inspection process.

Raw Material Inspection:
Ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing to ensure there are no internal defects.

CNC Machining:
Precision CNC turning and milling, with in-process dimensional verification at every stage.

Heat Treatment:
Induction surface hardening — hardness HB330–380, hardening depth ≥20 mm.

Final Inspection & Packaging:
100% final inspection + hardness test report, export-grade wooden crate packaging.
