A crane sheave, also known as a crane pulley or crane pulley wheel, is a grooved wheel mounted on a crane sheave bearing that guides the wire rope within a crane pulley system.

Crane sheaves serve three functions:

✔ To support and transmit the hoisting load;
✔ To reduce bending stress on the wire rope and extend its service life.

Functions of crane sheaves: to guide the wire rope and reduce friction. When a crane sheave rotates, the wire rope rolls along the groove of the sheave.
 
In a hoisting pulley system, the combination of moving and fixed pulleys determines the pulley ratio. A 4:1 system requires a hoisting block consisting of two moving pulleys and two fixed pulleys to reduce the pulling force to one-fourth of the load. Multiple hoisting blocks can be used in series to achieve higher pulley ratios.

The core function of crane sheaves is to change the direction of the wire rope, support the load, and reduce the bending stress on the wire rope per cycle. Selection is determined by the ratio of the sheave diameter to the wire rope diameter (D/d) and the geometry of the rope groove.

Groove diameter tolerance: For new ropes, the groove diameter should preferably be 1.00–1.03 times the nominal rope diameter. Exceeding tolerance can lead to rope flattening and abnormal wear[3]; fleet angle for wire rope should ideally be ≤2.5°[7].
